According to African news sources, on November 22, an Islamist militant group in Mali killed five armed members of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group.

The Wagner Group was established in 2014 by Yevgeny Prigozhin, a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, and has participated in various conflicts around the world. In Africa, the group is highly active in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

Prigozhin, the founder and leader of the Wagner Group, died in a plane crash in 2023. Reports suggest that during the Ukraine war, tensions between Prigozhin and Russia’s defense minister escalated, reportedly causing significant dissatisfaction for Putin.
