Local news and security sources in Kurram report that clashes between Shia and Sunni communities began last Thursday (November 21 / 1st Qaws) when a convoy of 200 vehicles belonging to Shia Muslims were attacked by unidentified gunmen in the Bagan and Uchat areas. The attack left 44 people, including women and children, dead and around 40 others injured.

Following the attack, families of the victims and Shia protesters staged violent demonstrations in Parachinar. Videos shared on social media show some protesters, including armed individuals, setting fire to shops, fuel stations, and houses after reaching the Bagan market.

After the arson in Bagan market, intense clashes broke out between the tribal Turi forces and Shia local tribes. Additionally, confrontations between Sunnis and Shias have occurred in the areas of Maqbal, Konj Alizi, Sadda city, and Balishkhel, resulting in 32 fatalities and injuries to dozens more so far.

Although no group has claimed responsibility for the Thursday attack, there is a long history of sectarian violence between Shias and Sunnis in the Kurram region.
