According to reports from local Syrian news sources, Russia has decided to withdraw key naval vessels from the Tartus port due to the deteriorating security situation in Syria.
The reports indicate that Russia has removed its ships, including the frigates Admiral Gorshkov and Admiral Golovko, the surveillance ship Grigorovich, and the oil tankers Vyazma and Yelnya, from the base.
This decision comes amid increased attacks by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, which have posed significant security challenges to the port. Satellite images taken between December 1 and 3 show the port appearing empty.
Russia is reportedly relocating its ships to safer locations to shield its naval forces from potential threats.
This move not only impacts Syria’s security dynamics but also has profound implications for Russia’s strategic position in the Middle East. It highlights that the ongoing situation in the region presents a new chapter of long-term challenges for Russia.
