Reports from Kabul indicate that two separate deadly traffic accidents occurred last night near Ghazni province on the Kabul-Kandahar highway, resulting in 120 casualties.
Hafiz Omar, the spokesperson for the Taliban’s Ghazni province, told the media that so far, 52 people have been killed in these two incidents, including women and children among the deceased. He added that around 70 others sustained injuries. Regarding the nature of the accidents, he stated, “The first accident occurred when a passenger bus collided with a gas tanker. The second accident also involved a collision between a passenger bus and a tanker, resulting in these casualties.”
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Taliban government, Zabihullah Mujahid, announced in a statement that investigations into these tragic incidents have begun.
Former Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani also expressed sorrow over the incident. In his statement, he said, “With deep sadness, I received the heartbreaking news of the death and injury of dozens of our compatriots on the Kabul-Kandahar highway. I extend my condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.”
It is worth noting that the persistent occurrence of such traffic accidents in Afghanistan is attributed to the lack of enforcement of traffic laws on major highways, inadequate training for drivers, and widespread corruption in the process of obtaining driving licenses.
