Reports from Iran indicate that Iranian police have detained Italian journalist Cecilia Sala for unknown reasons.
Italy’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed the news in a recent statement and stated that efforts to secure the journalist’s release are underway. According to the ministry, although Sala was engaged in journalistic activities in Iran legally, she was still detained.
Cecilia Sala, who was reporting from Tehran for the Italian daily Il Foglio, was taken into custody on December 19. However, Tehran police have not yet disclosed the reasons for her detention.
Meanwhile, the editor of Il Foglio, Claudio Cerasa, stated, “Journalism is not a crime.” He called for Sala’s immediate release and urged the international community to react to this situation.
