CNN has reported, citing a source from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), that the identity of the perpetrator of today’s New Orleans attack has been confirmed

According to the source, the attacker, identified as 42-year-old Shamsuddin Jabar, is a resident of Texas. CNN further reported, based on the same source, that an ISIS flag and an explosive device were found in the attacker’s vehicle. Another explosive device was discovered near the scene of the attack.

FBI officials told CNN that the nature of the attack suggests it was a premeditated act of terrorism, and evidence indicates that others may have been involved. Investigations are ongoing regarding the incident.

The attack occurred earlier today during New Year’s celebrations in the crowded Bourbon Street area of New Orleans, Louisiana. The attacker deliberately drove a Toyota pickup truck into a crowd, killing at least 15 people and injuring 35 others. Among the injured were two police officers, whose conditions are currently stable.

New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick said during a press conference that the attacker “attempted to kill as many people as possible.” She also confirmed that the attacker opened fire on officers at the scene but was ultimately killed in an exchange of gunfire with security forces.

The attack occurred just hours before the city was set to host the annual Sugar Bowl college football game. This event draws thousands of fans from across the country each year. This year, it features a matchup between the University of Georgia and Notre Dame. Authorities have stated that further details about the attack and any possible accomplices will be disclosed following ongoing investigations.
