GOMA, DR CONGO – M23 rebels have taken control of Goma’s airport, AFP reports, marking a significant escalation in the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
According to diplomatic sources, over 1,200 Congolese soldiers have surrendered and are now confined to a UN base at the airport. The rebel group had earlier claimed control of the strategic facility, a claim now confirmed by officials.
The capture of Goma’s airport raises concerns over the security situation in the region, as the city remains a critical stronghold in North Kivu province. The Congolese government has yet to issue an official response.
