Moscow—The Kremlin has dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to expedite a peace agreement in Ukraine, asserting that the conflict’s resolution is too complex for swift settlement. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that while Russia remains open to political and diplomatic solutions, the intricate nature of the war necessitates a thorough approach. He stated, “The president remains open to political and diplomatic methods of resolving this conflict,” but added that Russia’s objectives in Ukraine must be fulfilled, indicating a refusal to accept the current frontlines as permanent.
Peskov also clarified that any final peace agreement must be reached directly between Russia and Ukraine, not with the United States, though he acknowledged ongoing contacts with Washington.
In response to Russia’s proposal of a temporary ceasefire from May 8 to May 10 to commemorate Victory Day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the move as a deceptive gesture aimed at placating President Trump. Zelensky argued that a genuine ceasefire should not be temporary or aligned with symbolic events.
Meanwhile, the United States has expressed frustration over the lack of progress in peace negotiations. President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have warned that the U.S. may withdraw from mediation efforts if no significant headway is made.
Despite these diplomatic tensions, hostilities continue on the ground. Russian drone attacks have targeted Ukrainian cities like Kharkiv, resulting in civilian casualties, while Ukrainian forces have conducted strikes on Russian military facilities.
As both sides accuse each other of violating previous ceasefires, the prospect of a lasting peace remains uncertain. The Kremlin’s insistence on achieving its war aims and the ongoing military actions underscore the complexities involved in resolving the conflict.
