Washington D.C.:—Former Russian President and current Deputy Chair of Russia’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, has lashed out at the recent U.S.-Ukraine deal, referring to Ukraine as “a disappearing country” and accusing Washington of forcing Kyiv to pay for U.S. aid with its natural resources.
In a post on Telegram, Medvedev said, “Trump has finally broken the Kiev regime into paying for American aid with minerals. Now they will have to pay for military supplies with the national wealth of a disappearing country.” His remarks come after the announcement of a new agreement between the U.S. and Ukraine granting American companies preferential access to Ukraine’s critical mineral resources in exchange for reconstruction support.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called the deal a symbol of unity and cooperation, emphasizing that it strengthens President Donald Trump’s hand in future negotiations with Moscow.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal described the agreement as “fair, balanced, and beneficial,” insisting that Ukraine retains ownership and control of its resources.
However, Russian officials, including Medvedev, see the deal as a surrender of Ukraine’s sovereignty and wealth, portraying it as a dangerous precedent that undermines future peace negotiations.
Medvedev also noted recent political turbulence in the U.S., claiming that Trump’s approval ratings have declined and that the “deep state” is fiercely resisting him. He added that the U.S. Senate, led by Republicans, is preparing to introduce “more crushing sanctions” against Russia.
These developments come as the war in Ukraine continues to escalate, with both sides hardening their diplomatic and economic positions.
