Reports from Paktia province in southeastern Afghanistan indicate that on the first day of the second round of the national polio vaccination campaign, an unidentified gunman opened fire on health workers in Gardez, killing one polio vaccinator and forcing another to flee the scene.
Eyewitnesses told the media that the attacker fired at two health workers. One was killed instantly, while the other managed to escape and sought refuge in a nearby mosque.
So far, local Taliban authorities have not issued any statement regarding the incident, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
