China’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Yue Xiaoyong, has expressed concern about the rise of terrorist groups and threats in Afghanistan. Speaking at the Beijing Dialogue Center, he stated that terrorism has significantly grown under the current Emirate regime compared to the former Republican government.
According to Yue, during the Republic era, only one or two terrorist groups operated in Afghanistan. However, since the establishment of the Emirate, the number of terrorist groups in Afghanistan has risen to more than 20. He expressed concerns about the potential risks this poses to China.
Although the Taliban government’s deputy spokesperson, Hamdullah Fitrat, rejected the Chinese diplomat’s claims, a recent attack has added to the tensions. Yesterday, along the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border, armed assailants attacked Chinese nationals, resulting in the death of one Chinese citizen and injuries to four others.
