Reports indicate that approximately 100 grams of explosive materials were placed under his Toyota Land Cruiser, causing the blast.
Yefsekov’s wife was also injured in the incident, reportedly losing one of her legs. Her condition is said to be critical.
Reports suggest the incident is linked to the Azov regiment prisoners who were held at Olenivka Prison. Yefsekov had been accused of involvement in criminal cases related to the deaths of prisoners that occurred in July 2022.
On July 29, 2022, a powerful explosion occurred at Olenivka Prison, resulting in the deaths of at least 53 Ukrainian prisoners of war and injuring many others.
The prison housed Ukrainian soldiers, particularly members of the Azov regiment, who had been captured by Russian forces after the battle of Azovstal.
Russian-affiliated sources claimed the attack was carried out by Ukrainian forces using HIMARS rockets. However, Ukraine denied these allegations, stating that the explosion was deliberately orchestrated to cover up the torture and execution of prisoners.
Satellite images and other evidence suggested that the attack was not caused by an external rocket but was instead a deliberate internal explosion within the facility.
The incident sparked international reactions, with calls from the International Red Cross and the United Nations for an independent investigative mission. However, permission for such an investigation has not yet been granted.
